Too Poor to Hold Office,

[Omaha World-Herald]

It is reported that Secretary of State Day will resign, for the reason that he is too poor to meet the social obligations of his position. We have heard something like this before. It is an old story, but it brings up an important problem, which must sooner or later be solved.

The solution will lie in an increase of the salary paid our public officials or in a decrease in the tomfoolery which has attached itself to the social incidents of official life. A little more businesslike methods on the part of the people in fixing salaries and a little more practical consideration on the part of public minds for the homely character of this country's institutions, both political and social, and the public welfare will be advanced.
