At the A. M. E. Conference, Detroit, Mich., the women lost their fight to be ordained as ministers in the A. M. E. Church. A bill presented by Evangelist Martha J. Keys, asked that line 27, page 9, of the discipline be changed to read as follows. "And in exceptional cases the Bishop, by vote of the Annual Conference, may ordain any woman possessing qualifications as provided for entrance into the itineracy." The bill was adopted but after a debate to support it, the motion to lay the matter on the table won, 309 to 248.
