Full Text

The King of Spain has at last broke that sullen reserve which he has so rigidly observed towards the people of the United States, by appointing James Gardoqui, Esq. as his Minister to the United States of America.

The Spanish ambassador will no doubt, bring with him a suitable retinue to support that magnificence which is inseparable from the character of the representative of a crowned head. The Prince Maffarino, ambassador from Spain to the court of England, never expended less than 30,000l. sterling per ann. And the circulation of so capital a sum must be highly beneficial to the most opulent nation; but this advantage, and those arising from other ambassadors, will be lost to America.
