RETREAT OF THE MUSES.

FOR THE ALEXANDRIAN.

LOVE. BY ALBERTO.

And what is love but fancy's dream,
The magic of some witching theme,
When reason's laid asleep :
The wretch delighted owns its power,
Revels in bliss his little hour,
Then wakes him up to weep.

'Tis form'd of woman's beaming eye,
It breathes of woman's melting sigh;
Her snowy breast its living throne,
Her trembling voice the silver tone,
That bids him worship there;
He kneels, enchain'd, but ah ! deceit
Discovers soon the empty cheat;
His cheek in sorrow'd garb is drest,
Reflection leaves his tortur'd breast,
To madness and despair.
