Full Text

The Custom House Nomination.
This body which met at Baton Rouge on the 19th inst., after a rather stormy session, nominated, as was generally predicted they would do, Mr. William Pitt Kellogg one of the U.S Senators for Louisiana, as their candidate for Governor, and Mr. C. C. Antoine, State Senator from Caddo, for Lieutenant Governor. Of Mr. Kellogg's course as Senator from Louisiana, we suppose most of our readers interested at all in politics have already formed an opinion. He has exerted himself to procure the passage of acts coming under the internal improvement class, which will considerably benefit portions of the State, but his principal notoriety arises from his instrumentality in procuring the application of the enforcement act to the coming fall elections in Louisiana.
What sort of a Governor he would make if elected, will probably never be known, as it is understood he is in that case immediately after inauguration to be elected by the Legislature to succeed himself in his present position, and his Gubernatorial mantle is to fall upon Mr. C. C. Antoine, the colored Lieut. Governor, a man of extremely ordinary capacity, who acquired his position in his clique by supporting it in the Legislative fracas last winter, and who was one of the Wilderness Senators, whose migrations were so universally commented on.
It is difficult, if not impossible to predict at present, which corner the seemingly discomfited Pinchback wing of the party will take, but one course seems to us as open to them, with any prospect of success, whether they will take it or not remains to be seen.
