Full Text

The Boston Times, just before the late election in Massachusetts, came out with the following, intended to drive Democratic working men to the polls to vote for Cushing:

"If the employed should, however, decline to avail themselves of their elective franchise, who will say that their employers, who happen to sympathise with them in their political opinions, would not be justified in withholding from them employment! Certainly they would have no reason to complain if they should be thus neglectful of their duty as men and citizens."

Thus does a Loco paper advocate what it has accused the Whigs of doing, of coercing poor men into the support of their candidates. Not a single Loco paper has yet, to our knowledge, rebuked the course of the Times in this matter, so we may suppose they all acquiesce in it.

The Boston Times published a statement suggesting employers could withhold employment from workers who do not vote, aimed at driving Democratic working men to support Cushing. This is criticized as hypocrisy, as Loco papers had accused Whigs of similar voter coercion.
