Miles City Has Been Afflicted With Gang of Stillers.
Special Dispatch to the Standard.
Miles City, Mont., May 18.—Much surprise was manifested here to-day by the arrest of Arthur Grounds and E. Inglett on the charge of stealing. Grounds has for several years been a trusted employe of W. B. Jordan's store, and at his request slept in the store. It appears that since the first of the year they have been systematically robbing the store by Inglett going there at an early hour in the morning, making a small purchase, which was duly credited on the books, and loading up his wagon with goods, which were taken to his bakery and disposed of. Sheriff Hawkins was suspicious of something wrong on account of the amount of groceries he disposed of, and has been on watch every night for the past week and caught them at last this morning. Grounds is a young man well connected and highly respected. Inglett's establishment has been under surveillance for some time as a fence, and there has also been a strong belief that he was selling whiskey to Indians. Inglett is very shrewd, and from indications there is no doubt but that he has been running a small still in his bakery. Much stolen property has been recovered and Grounds has confessed. Other arrests are liable to follow.
