MONTGOMERY Co. MD. June 9,
"The people here are becoming more awake to the importance of having their choice upon one on whom they can most safely rely for the protection of their institutions and their enterprise. The encouragement afforded by the Northern States to the absconding of slaves, is becoming to us a grievance to which we cannot submit much longer. The constitution recognizing our property in slaves, guaranties its protection--and it is the duty of the Federal Government to see that our right in this respect is protected. This, and a proper and equal adjustment of the tariff, are to us of more interest than all other questions that agitate the country; and before we pledge ourselves to support any individual, we must be sure that he agrees with us on these subjects.
"A tariff for revenue, discriminating in favor of American industry, in our estimation, means nothing more or less than a protective tariff, for which we cannot go. In declaring, therefore, our preference for John C. Calhoun, we do so because his views on these questions are more consonant with our own.
"In relation to the time for holding the convention, I think the question settled in favor of May, 1844.-- As to the manner of electing delegates and the mode of voting, there can be no honest objection to their being chosen by districts, and to the vote per capita."
