CHE VERI AGE & BODY OF THR TIME HIS FORM AND PRESSURE. We have been accustomed to hear from hireling Printers and corner Poli- ticians, the doctrine of passive obedience to the perverse will and mandates of the present administration. But we were not prepared to hear the same slavish doctrine maintained upon the floor of Congress. Mr. Grundy and others of his stamp, have not scrupled, however, to denounce every man in the nation who dare exercise his constitutional right of examining into, and expressing his opinion against the war, as a moral traitor. The term is new, and perhaps Mr. Grundy may understand its mean- ing better than most people will. It im- plies, we suppose, moral turpitude: And upon what grounds does this moral gen- tleman presume to prefer such a charge against that virtuous and enlightened portion of the people, who dissent from the justice and policy of the war? Why forsooth, because they will not join in the goose-chase after Seamen's Rights thro' the wilds of Canada; because they will not agree to purchase a shelter for foreign deserters at the price of the blood of na- tive Americans; because they will not consent to become the tools and vassals of a Foreign Master. Enlightened e- nough to see the errors, and to penetrate into the secret motives of the men in power, they will not join in ascribing to them honor, and glory, and wisdom, and virtue. Let such men as Mr. Grundy "Crook the pliant hinges of the knee, " That thrift may follow fawning, But the free and independent men who compose the opposition to this ruinous war, are not to be turned from their course, by the fear of punishment, nor by the hope of reward.
