Too Much Lurid Literature Unbalances the Mind of Unfortunate Miss Carlson—She Was, However, Not Sent to the Asylum.
On a complaint charging insanity, Miss Victoria Carlson, aged 24, was yesterday examined by County Physician Mayo and Dr. E. S. Wright, before County Clerk James sitting as judge tempore, and committed to the county infirmary, where Dr. Mayo hopes he can treat her successfully. Carl A. Carlson and Alma Carlson, father and sister, respectively, of the young lady, testified that the affliction was brought on largely by excessive novel reading. They said she alternated in crying and laughing a great deal, and manifested a violent temper, particularly towards children, at times. It was also brought out that some of the unfortunate girl's ancestors had also been insane. The doctors pronounced her suffering from melancholia insanity, but as it was very mild they deemed it unnecessary to send her to the asylum at Provo. The family live at Grand Park Addition, this city.
