Full Text

New York General Sessions, October Term.

Timothy Conner's case, in which the sentence was suspended, was reserved for a more particular notice. While in Bridewell he wrote two letters to friends without, which perhaps turned the scale against him. In one he negotiates for the employment of one --, to swear him through. Unfortunately the very fellow was tried and convicted a few hours before him for counterfeiting coin! In the other letter, which was on the subject of bail, he exhorts his friend to be but little solicitous—get in to him, in the Bridewell, a phial of vitriol and a bit of an old sword which he can make a saw of, and so get through the iron gratings, and he thinks he can trust his legs for the rest of the formalities of the business.

The letters, as he might calculate they would be, were intercepted, and appeared against him to his great dismay no doubt on the trial. Young in years but old in guilt, he flattered himself he had so cleverly arranged every thing as to ensure his acquittal

"The counterfeit money and all they can prove, (said he to the marshal on going into court,) I don't care for, if they don't come over me with some yankee trick!" The trick as he called it, was too much for all his craft.
