Full Text

A terrible treaty. September 4.

By the English negotiations it, that closeness of political amity which were united for some time between Dutch and the French, and which menaced so many bad consequences to this country. has been entirely dissolved. and a most confirmed enmity has been produced between them.

The French have transmitted a long and peremptory memorial to the States General, in which they explain with a minute and insulting accuracy, all the services they have rendered them in the course of the late war, and conclude with a requisition for a sum not less than 60,000,000 livres. otherwise they give them to understand. in very plain and pointed terms, that they will on no account relinquish their possession of St. Eustatia and the Cape.

The Spaniards have also been induced to soften the rigour of the article respecting the British navigation to the bay of Honduras. it being now admitted. that the right of cutting logwood is to involve in the right of conveying it away.

And what is last, not least in the estimation of every Englishman, all the powers concerned in the negociation have been compelled to adopt the old language with respect to the seas which surround the island, and instead of the cold. unappropriate terms of the Channel. &c. are obliged to call them. in their final treaties: the British Seas.
