mail stage from Albany to Utica was waiting at
the stage-house at the East Canada Creek for
the mail, the horses took fright, ran a consider-
able distance and upset, dashing the carriage to
pieces. Capt. Read, of the U. S. army; his lady
and child, were in the stage—Mrs. Read at-
tempted to extricate herself and child during
the flight of the horses, and unhappily at the
time they were going with the greatest velocity
she was thrown from the stage, and the child
fell under the wheels and was instantly killed—
Mrs. Read was dragged some distance by the
horses and badly bruised, but it is hoped will
recover. Capt. Read succeeded in securing
the reins of the forward horses, but dislocated
his shoulder in holding them, and by endeavor-
ing to prevent Mrs. Read from falling.
