NEARLY ALL FIELDS INFESTED BY WEEVILS

COUNTY AGENT GIBSON ADVISES FARMERS TO WATCH THEIR COTTON CLOSELY.

After having made extensive field observations of the cotton crops in all sections of Terrell the county agent, A. E. Gibson, finds nearly all of the fields have a few spots of weevils which, if left alone, may do considerable damage.

"Farmers should watch their fields very closely, and not be afraid to use a little more poison if necessary, especially on the spots where weevils are found," he says. The prospect for a bumper cotton crop this fall could hardly be more favorable, according to Mr. Gibson, who asserts that it would be a sad mistake to allow these spots to go unpoisoned and result in a heavy hatch to come out in about two weeks and do serious damage to the young bolls.

Farmers should not be content with a partial control of the weevil, but should see that this cotton crop is sold by farmers and not eaten by boll weevils. Weevils will soon begin to migrate, and if the fields are kept free up to this time there will be very few of the migratory weevils to do harm. Otherwise, they could eat up a large per cent of the top and middle crops.

Farmers who have used poison as it should be used have been amply repaid for the expense and time consumed in making applications, and the efforts that have been put forth by the cotton growers of Terrell county have been very commendable. It has been thoroughly demonstrated that they can do the job by sticking to the task, and that cotton can successfully be grown under boll weevil conditions is no longer an uncertainty. We cannot afford to go this far with the marked success of control, and allow the weevils to get a part of the crop that can be saved.
