Full Text

The courts of France and Denmark appear to have a close understanding relative to Sweden; and a secret correspondence has been for some time past kept up, with much perseverance. Louis the XVIIIth, although greatly indebted to Bernadotte, is, at the same time, so bigoted in his principles of legitimacy, that every consideration of gratitude is yielding to the force of habit and the pride of opinion. The allied sovereigns having completely succeeded in driving every plebeian adventurer from the thrones which they occupied, now see, with pain, a soldier of fortune holding the sceptre of Charles the XIIth; and, considering his talents and services, they are at a loss how to get rid of him with any thing in the shape of a fair excuse. Altho' the Bourbons are eminently indebted to his activity, still they have a plea, that since their restoration they have not wholly recognized the claims of Bernadotte. Denmark enters with avidity on any plan by which Norway may be restored to her, and on this point is perfectly justifiable in making attempts to drive him out of Sweden, as the transfer of Norway was an act of injustice which the allied powers are not able to justify. In this state of things, a party has been created in favour of the son of Gustavus Adolphus, generally spoken of as the legitimate heir to the throne, in which France and Denmark have an interest. He is also nephew to the Empress of Russia, who, though not as active a politician as Catherine the second, is not without her influence. This party appears to strengthen. Great Britain avows to keep aloof from such intrigues; but we know the meddling policy of her cabinet & are perfectly satisfied that they act covertly on the subject. They have already called on Bernadotte in a manner rather peremptory, to lay before them the Treaty concluded with the United States.
