NEW YORK (ANP)—The European war, with the successive flow of shipping from the pier as Nazi columns conquered smaller countries and halted sailings to the United States, has brought lean days to workers along the extensive waterfronts of New York and New Jersey.

The big "shape-ups" in which several hundred white and colored longshoremen line up to be picked for crews to work at loading or unloading cargo have become a comparatively rare sight on waterways.
