THE NEW YEAR.
Reader! Whosoe'er thou art—high or low,
rich or poor, bond or free—we greet thee with A
Happy New Year. May'st thou, in the months
which are to roll on, gather the rewards of honesty,
industry, and virtue—May blessings attend
you and yours, in your outgoings and incomings
—May Providence smile on you, preserve and
defend you—And may the close of this year find
you, with hearts swelling with gratitude to the
Giver of every good and precious gift for his
manifold mercies, and, looking back with delight
to this day, may you be enabled then to reflect
with joy and satisfaction upon a YEAR WELL
SPENT.
We cannot permit the occasion to pass without
one word to our readers of ourselves. To say
that we are grateful for their support and favor,
would not—express our feelings. Nor do we
intend to let mere words convince them of the
sincerity of those feelings. We hope to show
that by our diligence and efforts to increase the
usefulness of our paper. We hope to show that
we can command success by deserving it. More
we need not say.
We end, then, as we began. Success to the
merchant, mechanic, and manufacturer! Prosperity
to our town and community! Health and
happiness, and a happy New Year—to all!
We expected to have been enabled to present
our paper to our subscribers to day in a
new and handsome dress. The vessel in which
the type was shipped, has, however, been detained
longer than we expected, in consequence of
the late gale, and we are, therefore, disappointed.
We hope, however, in the course of this or
the next week, to make the contemplated improvement.
We would take occasion, in this place, also to
state, that, in consequence of this improvement,
we hope our subscribers will be punctual in their
payments. Our heavy expenses can only be
met by the prompt liquidation of those debts, on
the faith of which they are incurred.
