We have to announce melancholy tidings from the Eastward. The Way-bill from Belfast by the mail of Saturday evening has the following endorsement on it:
"Belfast Post Office, Sept 2, 1814.
" The Enemy have taken Castine and landed 6 or 800 men in this place, with 15 sail of ships in the bay"
In addition to the above, a passenger in the Eastern stage that arrived on Saturday evening, reports that he saw the commanding officer of the late U. S. garrison at Castine, from whom he learnt that on Thursday last, a British force, composed of men of war and transports, with 3000 men landed at Castine and took peaceable possession of that place-The regular troops, consisting of about 150 men, finding that the British were landing in their rear, apparently with the view of cutting off their retreat, blew up the fort, and made good their retreat to Buckstown. The British respected private property -sent a flag to Belfast and informed them that provided they made no resistance, they should not be injured, and immediately despatched 600 men to take possession of the place.-The gentleman further informs us that a sloop of war, 2 brigs and two smaller vessels, one of which was supposed to be a bomb vessel, went up the river with the view of capturing the Corvette Adams. which is repairing at Hampden-where Capt Morris is said to have 50 guns mounted. Should this be the case the force that has gone up will be inadequate to destroy the Adams.
Ye authors of the war, behold the situation you have brought the country into.
