HOLLYWOOD, May 16. (UP).
Petticoats-taffeta ones in blue, sulphur yellow, ponciana red, cerise and sapphire blue-or in any other shade that strikes a girl's fancy, are the latest excitement in the film fashion center, according to William Lambert, designer.
"To be up to the minute, the colored taffeta petticoat must find itself under a frock of dull black crepe, the heavier the more modish the effect," Lambert says.
Lillian Harvey is one of the stars to adopt this new mode, having selected a petticoat in bright red.
Janet Gaynor is another—hers is of cream white taffeta, garnished in forget-me-nots and Cecil Brunner roses.
Helen Twelvetrees is to have one in dragon green to wear under dull black and Rosemary Ames has one made from Bagdad yellow.
The petticoats are moulded to the form to knee length when they take on fullness through godets, or through being cut in circular shape. When the hem line is reached they are quite fluffy-ruffles in effect. When the wearer walks, there is a suggestion of the bright color showing under the dull black and when she sits down, the billowy hem insists upon blotting out into view.
The effect is quaint and charming.
Formal gowns this season seem to be smartest when they are simple and stress the slender moulded silhouette with very little extra detail.
The latest modes display extreme and intricately cut out back decolletages, with the front decolletages only moderately low.
Prints, especially "pin and balloon" dots, are maintaining their prominent position for evening and informal afternoon wear.
One smart new afternoon ensemble displayed in the dot mode consists of a short-sleeved white jacket embroidered in huge navy dots and a long sleeve dress of crepe, embroidered in large white balloon dots. The jacket is an extremely brief model with a modified halter neck.
Finger length jackets are the most popular and necklines all feature cascaded and rippled collars of self trim, or of Mousseline De Soie.
