Parading a Colorful array of stars the Phi Beta Sigma basketball team has been practicing daily for the past week, in an effort to get in shape for the 15th annual Interfraternity basketball tournament, which opens up at Sunset Casino Saturday.
This year, the blue and white "sons of Sigma" are seeking to do what no other fraternal aggregation has been able to do, that is win the championship three successive years. Oddly enough, the annual fraternity basketball tournament was organized by Prof. C. V. Troup, a Sigma man back in 1925.
Nicks Stressing Passwork
Coach W. J. Nicks has been putting his champion cagers thru a fast pace on the hardwood of the Morehouse College gymnasium, stressing accurate passing, and teamwork. Aside from the workouts in the Morehouse "gym" the Sigmas had a heated practice game with the Clark University varsity, which is to be repeated tomorrow night.
Coach Nicks is not altogether optimistic about retaining the crown, but he admits that the 1939 outfit has a wealth of reserve strength, aside from four "all-Southern" performers.
The personnel of the team includes: Wm. Pemberton, Joe Johnson, Raymond Wainwright, Lyle Gittens, John Lawson, Joseph "Sonny" Wiles, Frank Nelson, Leslie Alexander, Frank Nelson, Roby Harris, and Clarence Smith.
