House, they block the wheels of Government, they prolong agitation, they add to the prevailing distrust in financial circles. They, as well as the Administration, are directly responsible for the existing state of things, and for consequences still more threatening and alarming.
In view of their extraordinary pertinacity in their factions course, regardless of the great and delicate interests of their constituents, and in view of the position of the party in power generally on this subject, and of the Administration particularly, we second the suggestion of a public meeting of the representatives of the trading, industrial, commercial, and financial interests of the city, without reference to party lines, to be held at some early day, to demand a return to reason and duty on the part of those at Washington who are trifling with the peace and well-being of the country. Such a meeting, we cannot doubt, would be attended by our commercial men, bankers, merchants, and conservative citizens generally. It could not fail to create an influence which would bear effectually and promptly upon the course of the disorganizers at the capital. It is time some genuine attempt were made to restore a truly patriotic and healthful state of public feeling, after the past weeks and months of lying and slanderous partisan efforts to stimulate irritation and agitation in the country.
It is palpable to all who have eyes to see, that there are men, parties, and journals, which, while pretending to deprecate agitation, and impudently professing to be ministers of conservatism, are yet doing all in their power to fan the flames of disorder and discord by heaping unmerited obloquy upon their opponents, individually and collectively, by uttering and reiterating the most insulting comparisons between Free Labor and Slave Labor, and by sustaining, either actively or negatively, the most traitorous disunion sentiments.
If the genuine conservatism of this city has any one duty to discharge more plain than another, it is to put its heel on such villainous incendiarism as this.
