Governor Paiewonsky in a release from Government Hill yesterday expressed strong opposition to the use of federal eminent domain powers as a means of enlarging the present land holdings within the boundaries of the V.I. National Park on St. John.
The governor is referring to the V.I. National Park bill now before Congress which is trying to acquire 3,300 acres of land on St. John to complete the 9,000-acre national park.
Besides contemplating the completion of the park, the bill if passed would secure five or six marine gardens.
The governor is of the opinion, "that extremely serious problems of relocation and related social hardships will result affecting a substantial part of the St. John community if condemnation were resorted to as provided under the legislation."
