Full Text

The first reception of the English Doctor Willis by the Queen of Portugal seems to have bordered on the ludicrous.—Upon being told that the English mad-doctor had come to her relief, and was then in the anti-chamber, she gave orders for his admission—upon his being introduced, not liking his mien and appearance she instantly screamed out aloud, and shrunk her head down between her shoulders, as in a terrible fright—the doctor, not in the least disconcerted, advanced towards her, and screamed aloud in the same manner—this so intimidated the Queen that she thought proper to submit to his prescriptions, which are said to have already had a favourable effect.
