ODOR HANDICAP IN SMUGGLING OF CHEESE

NOGALES, Ariz., Sept. 27.--Pedro Mendez erred in attempting to smuggle cheese with a strong odor from Mexico into the United States, according to the story told by the United States customs official who arrested Mendez today.

The customs officer said he had gone to Decks canyon, near here, to watch for smugglers when he fell asleep. He was awakened he said, by the smell of the cheese which he alleged Mendez was attempting to smuggle into the United States. Mendez' arrest followed.
