August 27. There is at present resident at Nancy in Lorrain a certain Adventurer, who far surpasses all that have appeared on the public Stage, either in this, or in any other Age. He has the Assurance to affirm, without blushing, that he was a Man in the Reign of Augustus; as a Proof of which, he produces several Fragments that are wanting in the
Books of the famous Historian Livy, who was, as he says, his intimate Acquaintance. He gives out that he preserved his Life by the Assistance of certain Drops, of which he sells no less than four for as many Louis d'Ors. Those who are inclined to visit him pay five Pistoles for Admittance, and four for a Catalogue of his Curiosities; after which they stay with him as long as they please, and he entertains them very handsomely. He speaks all the Languages of Europe elegantly, and is a perfect Master of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin into the Bargain; he appears very gay and lively, and seems to derive from Nature a Confidence requisite to sustain the Part he has undertaken to act.
