GOVERNMENT AGENTS.
Reuben M. Whitney has recently published a pamphlet at Washington on the subject of the currency, which contains, among other things, the following remarkable statements.
"Suppose," says he, "as has frequently been the case, a receiver should think proper to employ the public money in his hands in speculation for his private account, and when the treasurer's draft is presented to him for payment drawn on that money, he is unable to pay it, and the same is consequently protested"
And again—"It is a matter of public notoriety that the present system of rigid supervision exercised over the public receivers, requiring them to deposite in bank monthly the money they may have received, cannot be enforced : many will and do disregard the regulations, and great defalcations follow"
Whitney at last has an opportunity of doing the country some service Let him turn state's evidence and drag to light these swindlers and defaulters, high in the trust and confidence of the Government, who are guilty of such outrageous frauds upon the people whose money they collect.
