SARATOGA LIFE.—A fast watering place is Saratoga, and fashionable. As an instance of the way they do things there, as a portraiture of life at the springs, we reprint the following from an Albany paper:
Still another incident, more interesting than the first. A gentleman of wealth and respectability from New York city—a married man,—came to Saratoga with a young man whom he introduced to his friends as "Charley, his nephew." Charley was an amazing good looking young fellow, about 18 years old, with black hair and rosy cheeks, and a dash of frolic about him that won him troops of friends. The ladies were all in love with the little fellow, while the men were ready to die of envy. He danced elegantly, and talked love with all the ardor of a passionate soul. When in the society of men he was more than ever entertaining. He spoke of his conquests and his victims with the utmost sang froid. He had loves at Saratoga, and at Newport; on the peaks of the White Mountains, and away down among the plantations of the South. In fact crinoline had raised to him its shrine. Besides all this Charley was a spendthrift. He was prodigal of his money, and wine in abundance was brought in at his command. He insisted on payment for it all, and could tip goblets with the best of them. But one day Charley drank more than his usual allowance. He became unusually communicative; he said strange things, the least strange of which was that he was a woman! Charley was correct; he, she or it, was a woman, and the mistress of the wealthy New York gentleman, who furnished the "siller" with which Charley was enjoying Saratoga life.
The discovery of "my nephew's" sex necessitated a flight to other quarters, and it is more than likely that the old man and Charley are enjoying themselves at some other watering-place, where the same fashionable kind of life is kept up.
