Social Security Figures Released by State Welfare Board Also Show Florida Ranks Second In This Region
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Special)—Recipients of old age assistance in the 51 states and territories now participating in this program numbered 1,925,957, as of January according to Social Security Board figures made public here by the State Welfare Board.
At that time approximately 46,000 persons were receiving aid to the blind and 770,000 children were receiving aid to dependent children.
Florida, despite its lesser population, with 34,626 on the pay rolls, was second in the number of old-age recipients in Region 7, which includes also Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
It was exceeded only by Tennessee, with 40,291. Alabama had 19,142, Georgia 27,422, Mississippi 19,829, and South Carolina 19,024.
According to the Social Security Bulletin, from December to January the total number of recipients of old-age assistance in the 51 jurisdictions increased less than one per cent but the total amount of obligations incurred for payments to those recipients rose 3.5 per cent.
In January, the bulletin stated, the total number of recipients was 7.6 per cent higher than a year earlier, and the total amount of obligations incurred was 9.1 per cent greater.
