YOUTH HAS CLOSE CALL

LOS ANGELES, July 24. (U.P.) Robert Engle, 13-year-old Long Beach boy, never again will attempt to steal a ride, he admitted today after twice escaping death on the Mt. Lowe inclined railway.

Engle with two friends, David Kidd, 15, and Robert Kidd, 13, hopped on a train descending from the mountain peak, but missed his footing. Dangling by one hand, he escaped falling beneath the wheels of the car only when his companions held on to his leg and arms in sheer desperation.

The jar of the tram stopping at the bottom of the incline tossed the boy downward his head lodging between the car and the platform. His companions were nearly panic-stricken when they failed to free him.

One of the boys finally found help at a nearby ranger's camp and Engle was freed before the operator at the top of the incline started the car back upward. Engle was only bruised by the mishap.
