Full Text

A New Sewing Machine - The Dundee Advertiser states that a machine for sewing bags with a true over head seam, sewn exactly as is done by hand, has been invented by a Dundee mechanic, after ten years' labor, and has been patented in this and many foreign countries. The machine can work at the almost incredible speed of 100 stitches a minute, even with common jute thread double and either plain or tarred, and it is intended by two young girls. In sack sewing three stitches go to the inch so that the marvellous speed of 33 inches, or nine yards and a quarter, of cloth can be sewn in a minute. This is much faster than convenient for the sewing of the bottom ends of the sacks, which require more time for the feeding in, but it goes on very easily and steadily, sewing the ends of five sacks per minute.
