Broderick Monument.—The following views of the S. F. Telegram are sound: It is with exceeding regret that we notice an attempt on the part of a cotemporary journal, to make the erection of a monument to Mr. Broderick solely a work for partisans.—We regret this, for the reason that Mr. Broderick belonged to no party. As a Senator, he was the representative of the people; his public acts were for the good of the people, not for the especial benefit of party. Especially we condemn the spirit manifested by the organ of a party with which Mr. Broderick, during his life, did not affiliate, and with which, as a distinctive political party, he had no sympathy. To be sure, Mr. Broderick did entertain some views in common with the Republicans, but it is also true that many Republicans contended that he was the greatest enemy their cause had to encounter. Now that Mr. Broderick is dead and in his grave, and that his admirers and friends, those who applauded his public course for its tendency to good for the State, wish to erect a monument to perpetuate his memory, it is the height of bad taste for the organ of the smallest political party in the State to come forward and assert that the erection of the monument must be the work of the members of its party or the work will not be completed. Nothing can do more to retard the progress of the work and to prejudice the memory of Mr. Broderick, than the indiscreet course pursued by the Times. That paper does injustice to Mr. Broderick, and to his thousands of admirers outside the Republican organization.—We trust, however, that the injustice of which we complain will not retard the exertions of those who, to exhibit their admiration of the man and their disapprobation of the mode of his death, seek to erect a monument to his memory which shall be an honor to them and do credit to the character of the man whose memory is sought to be perpetuated.
