STREET SPRINKLING NEEDED.
Numerous Complaints of the Alleged Neglect of Contractors.
Numerous complaints have been received by the District Commissioners during the past month relative to the neglect of the street sweepers in properly sprinkling the pavements before applying their brushes. A sample complaint of this kind emanates from F. A. Rae, who says that in some cases that have come under his observation no water whatever was applied to parts of the street surface, and such sprinkling as was done was of the most perfunctory and insufficient sort. As a result he asserts that clouds of dust arise as the brushes are applied, which the wind carries into the eyes and clothing of those passing by, and into the adjoining houses. The dust thus raised, Mr. Rae thinks not only an intolerable nuisance, but a menace to health.
This and other similar complaints have been referred to the Street Cleaning Department, and the contractors' attention has been called to them with the result that the latter have given satisfactory assurances to the department that the matters complained of will be remedied in future.
