Full Text
"The Globe copies the following very good paragraph from a Plymouth (Mass.) paper: The men who in political life are frank, free above disguise, and without intrigue, are not unfrequently termed, by the artful and designing dictators. Honest and independent in their opinions, the better and more valuable portion of the community, express on public questions their true sentiments, without stopping to consider consequences. How often is that such a course, which deserves commendation and respect, is perverted and misrepresented by political hypocrites and unprincipled schemers! "If the individual who honestly and boldly expresses his opinions, is in a position to attract notoriety—if he is connected with the press—if he is in public life—or if he possesses great influence which he does not abuse, there will be sly and malicious slanders against him, by bad men, for mischievous purposes." The idea set forth is good, but how an advocate for Mr. Van Buren could, at the very moment of advocacy, copy it, with approval, we cannot imagine.
