A U.S. Senate subcommittee holds hearings in New York on labor issues, where Brotherhood of Telegraphers representatives detail wage cuts, blacklisting, and ignored grievances by Western Union affecting 10,000 workers. New York Times attributes wire failures to unrepaired lines since linemen's strike on July 19, not operator sabotage.

Full Text

A subcommittee of the United States Senate is now giving a series of hearings on the labor question, in New York, and some of the representatives of the Brotherhood of Telegraphers have presented to it their side of the question involved in the strike. They showed how the wages of operators had been continuously reduced by a corporation that had repeatedly diluted its capital, how complaining employees had been ignored and placed upon a "black list," and how at last, the appeal of individual men having been disregarded, the operators' grievances were laid before the company by the representatives of 10,000 workmen, and were ignored again. In this connection it may be said that the New York Times charges that the failure of the Western Union wires is due, not to the mischief of the striking operators, but to the fact that since the linemen struck, July 19, the labor of repairing the wires has been left unperformed except so far as it has been attempted by a few unskilled hands.
