Pick out the Cottony Cottonwoods Right Now.

In a few days the air will be filled with flying cotton from the female of the cottonwood species. Many of the groves and street rows of trees planted about Gunnison have grown too crowded and there is a general movement to thin them out. The proper time to do it is in the early spring before the trees leaf out. How, then, shall one determine which are the cottony cottonwoods, the ones that should be eliminated first. We do not know of any method except to mark them this spring, either by the ax or to girdle them with a saw and let them dry on the stump during the summer, ready for good firewood next spring.
