From the N. Y. Tribune of this morning.
By last night's mail we received reported majorities from two-thirds of the State. They render morally certain the choice of a decided Whig Legislature and a Whig Governor by a small majority. Mr. Bartley, as our correspondents have all along assured us, runs behind the fair Whig strength-behind the Whig candidates for Congress, &c. On the other hand, the Loco Foco strongholds are polled out to their last vote. Hamilton (including Cincinnati) being pushed up to an unprecedented majority by the Naturalization of 1200 Loco Foco voters the day before election. But, apart from these few Counties, there is a moderate but steady Whig gain throughout the State on the vote of 1842, when Shannon beat Corwin by 3,405, which must ensure Bartley's election.
Here are the reported majorities in all the Counties we have heard from:
Bartley. Tod.
Total, so far, 18,295 14,194
Bartley ahead, 4,102
In the counties heard from Shannon's majority in 1842 was 1320, showing a Whig gain so far of 5422. The counties to come in gave Shannon 2,035 majority.
Members of Congress elected.
I. James J. Faran, Loco.
II. F. A. Cunningham, Loco.
III. R. C. Schenck, Whig, re-elected.
IV. Joseph Vance, Whig, re-elected.
VI. Henry St. John, Loco, re-elected.
IX. Augustus Perrill, Loco-gain.
X. Columbus Delano, Whig-gain.
XI. J. Blenkerhoff, Loco, re-elected.
XII. Samuel F. Vinton, Whig, re-elected.
XIII. Isaac Parrish, Loco-gain.
XIV. Alex. Harper, Whig, re-elected.
XV. Joseph Morris, Loco, re-elected.
XVI. James Matthews, Loco, re-elected.
XVII. Wm. C. McCaushten, L. re-elected.
XVIII. D. A. Starkweather, Loco.
XIX. Danl. R. Tilden, Whig, re-elected.
XX. J. R. Giddings, Whig, re-elected.
XXI. Joseph M. Root, Whig gain.
We are led to fear, by the reported majorities for Governor, that Van Metre is beaten for Congress in the Ross District.
The IXth and XIIIth Districts were carried by the Whigs last year, solely by reason of the personal unpopularity of the opposing candidates-each of these Districts having given Van Buren a majority in 1840. We lose them now, because less exceptionable men have been put against us.
LEGISLATURE.
Our returns presage a decided Whig majority in each branch of the Legislature.— Last year we had 16 to 20 in the Senate, and 39 to 33 in the House. Already we have this year gained 1 Senator in Medina and Lorain, 1 in Stark, and 1 (says the Canton, Stark co. Repository,) in Wayne! giving us 19 to 17 if there are no other changes. But the Columbus State Journal reports another gained in Delaware, Marion and Crawford, which would give us 20 to 16 if there are no drawbacks, and we do not see where there is likely to be any.
As to the House, we have gained 2 in Belmont, 1 (reported) in Delaware, Marion and Crawford, 1 in Guernsey, 1 in Lorain. 1 in Medina, 1 in Portage, 1 in Trumbull, and 1 (reported) in Wayne-seven certain and two reported. We have certainly lost 2 in Licking, and may have lost 2 in Ross, Pike, &c. (or we may have gained 1 there) and we probably have lost 1 in Morgan, Perry and Washington. At the worst, we must have 2 majority in the Senate and 10 in the House, and we shall probably have much more.— We expect to gain 3 in Brown, Clermont and Clinton, if no others.
