Of the celebrated Waverly novels our Greenfield is, as some suppose, the author.
Was not this Greenfield, a Scottish Landed proprietor of about 500 sterling a year, a Doctor of Divinity, and, as pastor of a church, and professor of rhetoric and belles lettres in the University of Edinburgh, the colleague of Dr. Hugh Blair, whom he was thought to have surpassed in ability, learning and eloquence?
Did he not occasionally occupy the chairs of other professors, and lecture in their stead with the same promptitude, ability and effect and so consequently with what preceded and was to follow, as if the course of each had been his own? and did not his various learning and endowments qualify him to discharge the duties of any professorship in that University?
Was he not cited before the Presbytery of Edinburgh on a charge of crime most gross, odious and offensive? Was not the same charge brought to the notice of the faculty of the University and yielding to the solicitations of David Hume the younger and other professors, who, while they discredited the charge eo nomine, yet thought his misconduct, or non amounting to certain punishment short of law, such as would lead to his expulsion and did he not, instead of meeting the charge, quit his ministry and professorship without their cognizance and elude at second, in entire from justice, at best a violated clerical order, and go into obloquy, a liner's un elj evr afe energe, ws lny the taeit eafoiseton of thre tnth of the oh arge be d cnt bo hie condeut t rom 0a ea
