Southern World's Fair Rates at Low Water Mark Now.
The world's fair rates from Savannah have been reduced to $34.20 on limited tickets good for 15 days. The reduction was made at the meeting of the rate committee of the Southern Passenger Association in Atlanta last week. The limited time tickets were put on by the southern railroads about two weeks ago, the rate from Savannah being fixed at $35.10. At the meeting of the rate committee in Atlanta it was decided that in order to put Savannah in line with certain Florida points a still further reduction was necessary, and the cut to $34.20 was made. The rate of $35.10 for tickets good to Oct. 1 is still in force.
General Passenger Agent J. C. Haile who returned from Atlanta yesterday morning, said that he thinks the world's fair rates from the south are now finally fixed, and he does not believe that any further reduction will be made.
"The distance from Savannah to Chicago is about 1,000 miles," said Mr. Haile, "and a rate of one and three-quarter cents a mile each way is as low as the southern railroads can afford to make in these times, when we are all endeavoring to cut our cloth as close as possible. The world's fair is certainly the greatest show ever seen in this country and everybody who can manage to visit it should do so, but the railroads are not philanthropic institutions altogether and cannot afford to carry passengers to the world's fair even at a loss. I would advise those intending to visit the world's fair not to wait for cheaper rates, as I do not think there is any likelihood of further reductions."
