Husband Pumps 13 Bullets into His Wife's Body

A "jealous" husband fired an estimated 13 bullets into his wife's body late Friday night, killing her on the spot, police reported.

The crumpled body of Mrs. Margaret Caldwell, 23, of 400 Currier St. N.E., was found beside a parked car on Parkway Dr. N.E. Friday night police said.

Detectives estimated that she had been shot at least 13 times with a .22 caliber revolver. The assailant was still pumping bullets into the woman when the first policeman arrived on the scene to investigate the shooting.

Homicide Detective L. Goss said he arrested Oscar Lee Caldwell, 28, of 400 Currier St., and held him for suspicion of murder pending further investigation.

Detective Goss listed the motive for the shooting as jealousy.

He said Caldwell told him that his

wife was "running around on him with other men and refused to quit when he warned her about it."

Patrolman E. A. Clements was near the scene of the accident when he heard shots fired. He ran to Parkway Dr. and saw a crowd of people looking down the street.

Someone yelled, Clements reported, "stop that man from shooting that woman.'

As he came near the scene, Clements said he saw Oscar Caldwell standing behind a parked car firing shots toward the woman's body.

Clements said he yelled for the man to drop his gun. He said Caldwell walked toward him. then suddenly turned back toward the victim and fired two more shots in the direction of her body.

Detective Goss quoted Caldwell as saying he ordered the woman from a "beer joint" on Parkway Dr.. N. E., and was taking her home when the shooting occurred. Goss said the woman was fatally shot in the chest and in the face. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Grady Hospital.

The latest slaying was Atlanta's 51st homicide of the year. The homicide rate this year is far ahead of the rate during the same period in 1961.
