Hoover to Veto Farm
Allotment Bill if Presented
The following is of interest to farmers of the section, many of whom are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the allotment farm relief measure.

"President Hoover dispelled all doubt that a veto awaits the domestic allotment farm relief bill if it reaches the White House before March 4.

"It seems clear that the domestic allotment plan is wholly unworkable,' the chief executive said in a special message to congress dealing with the economic situation generally.

"It will do more harm than good to agriculture."

"At the same time the president described as the least harmful and the most hopeful' of all the farm plans the proposal made by Secretary Hyde some time ago for temporary leasing of marginal farm lands by the government.

"It has the merit of direct action in reducing supply to demand and thus unquestionably increasing prices,' Mr. Hoover said of the Hyde plan.

"Earlier in the day the allotment bill was formally reported to the senate by its agriculture committee with a not very optimistic hope for enactment at this session of congress.

"The committee differed sharply with processors of cotton and wheat, the commodities to be affected, asserting enactment of the measure would raise the retail price of bread less than a cent a loaf and a cotton shirt less than two cents.

"The report was presented by Senator Frazier, republican, North Dakota, on behalf of the agriculture committee, which voted approval of the controversial measure a week ago after making drastic revisions in the measure as it passed the house.

"Changes made by the committee, including elimination of acreage control provisions and restriction of the bill's benefits to wheat and cotton, were explained in the report as desirable on the ground the bill is 'experimental' and should be tried out on a comparatively simple scale."
