Maj. Murphy's card is longer than above quoted, but the portion published is all that concerns the subject. We have always understood that Maj. Murphy used the language quoted, we certainly did not—but as he disclaims it, we accept his word for it, the more as it will tend to restore harmony among the "representative Radicals of Knoxville." We intended no disrespect to Maj. Murphy, who is a clever gentleman, whose only failing is his political belief.
Since then, Major Murphy received the following explanatory note from the publishers of the Press and Herald:
Knoxville, June 9, 1870.
Maj. J. L. Murphy:
Dear Sir: I regret that a "squib" in the Press and Herald this morning should have been misunderstood by you. A slur on yourself was farthest from my thought. "The quotation" I had never heard denied, and honestly supposed you had used the language. I have ever esteemed you highly, and sincerely trust our pleasant personal relations may not be disturbed.
Yours truly,
RAMAGE.
