FREEBORN COUNTY
William Freeborn, for whom this county established in 1855 was named came from Ohio to St. Paul in 1848. After a few years he established himself at Red Wing and was elected to council of the territorial legislature, serving from 1854 to 1857.
In 1855 he was mayor of Red Wing.
He went to Montana in 1864, and finally settled on a ranch in California. From here in 1899 he wrote that he had never traveled on a railroad.
