THE NEW TARIFF REJECTED.

The bill to increase the duties on certain imported articles, was yesterday rejected in the senate, after three or four hours' debate. Though the particular motion by which the bill was lost, was carried by a single vote only, we have reason to believe that the majority would have been greater, had the question been a direct one upon the merits of the bill. Several gentlemen, we understand, one or two of them from the north, who voted against postponing the bill, would have voted against its enactment, either in the shape in which it passed the house of representatives, or as it was proposed to be modified by the committee of the senate.
