A Whole Family Brutally Murdered By Negroes—They Are taken from the Jail And Hung.—The vicinity of Henryville, Indiana, was the scene of a most terrible tragedy the week before last. Three negroes murdered a whole family by the name of Park. The object was to secure money, which they believed Mr. Park had in his possession. One of the negroes, named Johnson, who was suspected, was arrested and made a full confession.
Later.—Squire Taylor, Charles Dixon and George Johnson, negroes, charged with the murder of the Park family, were taken out of jail this morning, the 17th, by a mob of forty persons, masked and disguised, thirty-three of whom entered the jail and the rest stood guard in the street.
The negroes were hanged in the woods two miles from town. When found, Taylor had been stripped naked and burned in a number of places with brands from the fire which the mob had kindled, probably with the intention, as expressed by them, of roasting them alive. Taylor and Johnson were hanged on the same tree; Davis on another tree some 100 feet distant. The mob was made up of citizens from the vicinity of Henryville, Otis county, and Charlestown. No one attempted to interfere with the mob, who broke in two doors with sledge hammers and chisels, but the Sheriff unlocked the third, seeing he could not keep them out.
