A serious disturbance has broken out in the upper part of Adams county, Illinois, between a portion of the "old settlers" of that and Hancock county, and the Mormons. The "old settlers" had demanded of the Mormons to leave the country, in consequence, it is said, of the frequent thefts and depredations committed by them, or they, the "old settlers," would proceed at once to expel them by force. To this the Mormons, after some opposition, replied, that they would give up their possessions at reasonable valuation.—The "old settlers" thereupon signified their willingness to accept the proposition, provided the Mormons would pledge themselves not to form another settlement in the vicinity. But the Mormons refused to give the pledge, and hostilities were immediately commenced by the "old settlers." The excitement was very great, and large numbers of Anti-Mormons were pouring in from the adjoining counties and from Missouri.
At the last accounts, (to the 16th Sept.) several of the Mormon settlements had been attacked and their property destroyed—though there seems to have been no fighting. Something like three hundred houses in all had been burnt. The Mormons, however, were embodying themselves for defence, and the Sheriff of Nauvoo, it was said, had ordered out the Mormon legion. Mr. F. A. Worrell, of Carthage, was shot by two Mormons while riding across the prairie on the 16th. This is indeed a deplorable state of things in a civilized country.
