WASHINGTON, D.C.--Unless his successor is named before then, Sen. Price Daniel (D-Tex) says he will be on hand to help the Democrats organize the new Senate.
Daniel, who becomes governor of Texas next Jan. 15, submitted his resignation from the Senate last September to become effective as soon as his successor is elected. Texas Gov. Allan Shivers has not called a special election for that purpose.
Daniel said in a statement Saturday he still hopes his successor will be named by the time Congress convenes Jan. 3, but said he will be available if he is still in office.
If Price Daniel, the lineup would become a 48-48 tie which Vice President Nixon could break in the Republicans' favor in organizing the Senate.
