The remarks in last evening's Democrat concerning the heating of our public schools were appropriate to the occasion. There has certainly been a remissness in the line of attention to the physical growth and comfort of our school children. Much has been said in words of sounding laudation of the sublime management of our city schools. In regard to this the writer has made some remarks in the not distant past which were like the seed that fell upon stony ground. Perfect management under the existing over-crowded condition of the schools is of course impossible. But some approach to sanitary rules might be followed if any regard is had for the frequent criticisms made by those who have investigated the matter. Some of the rules are a physical and consequently a mental abomination and should be abolished. The school seems to be conducted upon the erroneous idea that the fathers and mothers of our city think more of preserving the school house than they do of caring for the health of their children. There is no doubt but that a radical change in the management of the schools would result, if parents had a full knowledge of the existing rules and regulations. A day's neglect in the supply of heat is bad enough, but this is not the only feature of the conduct that calls for modification. The Express makes this criticism with regret, as none but the kindliest feelings are entertained for the teachers now connected with the city schools. The expressions made voice the sentiment of many parents, who have repeatedly requested that some comment be made. The opportunity for timely remarks has occurred and the remarks have been made.
