May Lose His Life In Efforts to Save Benefactor's Property.
Chicago, July 16.—Robert Hayes, deaf, dumb and lacking his left arm, attempted to save the property of his benefactor from a fire at 2315 Cottage Grove avenue last night, and his action may cost him his life. Hayes' clothing was ignited, and, bewildered and half suffocated, he fell to the floor and probably was fatally burned before being rescued by the police.
The life of Miss Lily Dillon, who was in bed on the third floor, helpless from illness, was saved by her two sisters, Catherine and Loretta, who carried her to the street. Harry Dillon was nearly suffocated while searching for his sister, and Andrew Mandable, sixteen years old, while aiding in her rescue was burned about the legs.
Lieutenant William Older of the insurance patrol was burned on the hands while assisting in the rescues. The loss is $2,000.
