A
TOWN BY THE SEA
Night jasmine, incense of high
wizardry,
Drifts through the darkness, invisible
to my eyes;
Somewhere barbaric music loudly
thrills and cries.
And stabs with pain the night's
sweet mystery...
And the sea's soft white waves
come creeping in to me
Like beautiful thoughts from the
crowded years
(With their laughter and prayers
and lonely tears)
And fill my remembering heart
with memory.
And I try
to
forget all over
again.
But still remember a tale I have
read or known—
A tristful tale of heavy hearts
and pain:
Of two who lived
and thought
they loved—and one
Who broke the other's heart, unhappily,
Long, long ago... in a town by
the sea.
