Gold Ore Found
Secret of Location Died
With Discoverer
PAINTED HILLS, Nev., Sept. 19.—(UP).—The mine that nature dug—a cave lined with gold ore—was discovered here.
George Forbes, bewhiskered Fallon prospector, stumbled on it. It lies in the hills between this crossroads and San Springs.
Thousands of tons of gold ore lie on the cave's floor, it was said.
Half a century ago Hank Knight, mystery man of the desert, sunk a shaft 50 feet deep in a volcanic vent, and in following a streak of ore, broke into a cave.
But Knight died and with him went the secret of the mine's location.
Forbes, wandering through the Alkali wastes with his donkey, was entranced by Sand mountain, whose ghostly height towered above the moon-drenched desert. He spent the night on Sand mountain. The next day he explored the painted hills to the northwest and found nature's ready-made mine.
The floor of the cave is lined with limonite and quartz, carrying free gold. Three assays taken from material which evidently fell from the cave's hanging wall was valued at $1160 a ton.
Forbes explored back from Hank Knight's shaft. He said the cave extends as far back as he can throw the beam of his carbide light.
Several thousand tons of the ore are on the floor of the cave and the sides are lined with it, Forbes said.
